Homestead Crater is a well-kept secret. It’s situated in a touristy but elegant little town in Midway, Utah that is definitely off the beaten path. For about fifteen bucks, you and about 19 others can don a life preserver and lower yourself into this limpid pool of 95 degree mineral water. This is the only warm SCUBA certification site in the continental US, and for a bit more, you can rent a mask and snorkel to further explore this natural wonder.
Note that it is located in the middle of a golf resort, so it’s a bit awkward emerging in your swimsuit as members drive by in their golf carts. Parking is a challenge if your vehicle is larger than a standard coupe, but this experience – and the entire town – is worth the trip.
Swimming sessions are roughly 55 minutes, and that’s plenty of time to explore the entire crater. Snorkels aren’t really necessary, as there isn’t a whole lot to see beneath the surface. The crater is 65 feet deep at it’s deepest, and even rock that is millions of years old just looks basically like rock. But the water feels amazing, and is constantly moving thanks to the natural spring source, two miles below the crater itself. It is a geothermal crater (not a volcano) and they offer private after-hours rentals, paddleboard yoga, and are pretty open to ideas. Just ask ’em!

Be sure to book your swim at least 2 weeks in advance, as they fill quickly, particularly on weekends. They are super responsive if you have any questions. Just send an email to info@utahcrater and tell them Eli sent you! : )
